Job Summary

Under specified supervision of the Superintendent of Parks and Open Space, performs work related to the Towns Parks, Aquatic Facilities, Trails and Open Space program including the maintenance and improvement of parks, recreation areas, pool mechanical equipment, trails and open space, grounds, medians, park and aquatic buildings, structures, landscapes and streetscapes. Β Position is non-exempt under FLSA.

Parks Technician II – Under general supervision, this is the journey-level class in the Parks Technician series. Incumbents assigned to this class are expected to perform the full range of work assigned to this class and to work with independence and initiative.

Parks Technician III – Under direction, this is the master-level class in the Parks Technician series. At this level, employees may give directions, establish priorities, coordinate work projects and monitor other personnel, volunteers or contract staff. Incumbents work independently, exercising judgment and initiative. Employees train other staff on duties and safety practices, may assign and may exercise supervisory authority in the absence of the supervisor.

Essential Job Duties

  • Performs manual labor and semi-skilled manual labor associated with the maintenance of the Town parks, aquatic facilities, trails, cemetery, open space forestry functions, and athletic fields.
  • Inspects and repairs park equipment and facilities such as playground equipment, pool mechanical equipment, picnic tables, and signs.
  • Inspects parks and trails for safety hazards.
  • Responds to on-site inquiries from the public.
  • Maintains and repairs computerized park irrigation system, pool mechanical equipment, change and adjust components, maintains controllers, and assesses the installation and major maintenance of plumbing.
  • Provides technical assistance on landscape, trails, irrigation, and aquatic plans submitted to the Town for park, open space, and median development.
  • Identifies various trees and plants by type and evaluates specific plant health and maintenance needs.
  • Applies herbicides and pesticides in accordance with prescribed guidelines.
  • Applies required pool chemicals in accordance with local regulations and equipment guidelines.
  • Operates equipment including but not limited to all-terrain vehicles, tractors, trenchers, sod cutters, roto-tillers, skid steers, trucks, trailers and various hand tools.
  • Maintains and repairs Town structures and buildings including two outdoor aquatic facilities.
  • Communicates regularly with internal customers (staff), for the planning and organization of special events.
  • Assists department throughout the duration of community events including set-up and clean-up of grounds.
  • Clears snow from parks, rights-of-way, sidewalks, and sport fields as needed.
  • May be on 24-hour on-call status, required to work overtime, evenings and weekends.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of irrigation systems, including installation, troubleshooting and repair.
  • Knowledge of aquatic/pool mechanical systems and daily operations.
  • Knowledge of pesticides, herbicides and their application.
  • Knowledge of equipment and supplies supporting a parks maintenance function.
  • Knowledge of building maintenance.
  • Knowledge of laws and safety related to vehicle operation.
  • Knowledge of regulations associated with aquatic facility operations.
  • Knowledge of park maintenance safety procedures.
  • Knowledge of landscape maintenance, plant identification, irrigation systems, and basic small engine repair.
  • Skill in maintaining records and logs.
  • Skill in dealing tactfully and effectively with the public.
  • Skill in the safe and lawful operation of a motor vehicle.
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize and solve problems both independently and within a group setting.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to handle conflicting requests for service in a diplomatic manner.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, subordinates, and the general public.
  • Ability to use standard office equipment, personal computer and job-related computer application.
  • Ability to obtain Certified Playground Inspector certification.

Supplemental Information

Education, Experience, Special License and/or Certification Qualifications:

Parks Technician II – High school diploma or equivalent; minimum of four years of experience in parks, trails, and open space maintenance, irrigation systems, operation of park maintenance equipment, and/or facility maintenance. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered. Possess a Driver's License with a safe driving record for continued employment and one or more of the following: Landscape Technician Certification, Landscape Irrigation Auditor Certification, Irrigation Systems Certification, Certified Pool Operator License, Pesticide Applicator License, and/or Playground Safety Inspection Certification. Prefer applicant with a Certified Pool Operators (CPO) license or ability to obtain within six months.

Parks Technician III - High school diploma or equivalent; six years or more of experience in parks, trails, and open space maintenance, irrigation systems, operation of park maintenance equipment, and/or facility maintenance. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered. Possess a Driver's License with a safe driving record for continued employment and two or more of the following: Landscape Technician Certification, Landscape Irrigation Auditor Certification, Irrigation Systems Certification, Certified Pool Operator License, Pesticide Applicator License, and / or Playground Safety Inspection Certification.

Physical Requirements of the Job:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to speak, read, or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand, use hands, fingers, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to walk, sit, climb or balance, and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.

Duties require a full range of physical motion and activities including manual digging, pushing, pulling, lifting, twisting and turning the upper body, stooping, kneeling, crouching, climbing in and out of meter pits, balancing, crawling, reaching for objects, walking and standing.Β 

Work Environment:

The majority of the work is performed in the field and on occasion in inclement weather. The employee regularly works around park maintenance equipment and is exposed to equipment vibration, fumes, airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals. The employee may occasionally work in high precarious places, and is exposed to electrical shock and sharp objects. The noise level can range from low to very loud.Β
