Graduate Roles in UK
Description

ABS Consulting delivers engineering risk analysis, assessment and design services across a wide range of industries, including the Nuclear, Oil, Gas and Chemical sectors.

A Graduate Engineer will join an expanding multi-discipline team based in Warrington, supporting the analysis, assessment and design of facilities around the world subjected to conventional and extreme loading conditions; including seismic, extreme weather, blast, fire and accidental impact.

Working under the supervision of experienced engineers you will undertake engineering calculations, structural and finite element analysis, and technical reporting. Assignments may include the assessment of buildings, cranes, pipework and equipment, together with the development of strengthening and retrofit solutions.

You will receive structured technical training and mentoring from experienced engineers, developing your skills in structural calculations, finite element modelling and the assessment of existing facilities. You will progressively take responsibility for defined tasks, with appropriate technical supervision and review.

What You Will Do:

  • Undertake engineering analysis and assessment of structures, plant and equipment for compliance with applicable codes, standards and contract requirements.

  • Review drawings, specifications and site information to establish structural arrangements, loading and assessment criteria.

  • Prepare calculations for structural members, bolted and welded connections, equipment supports and anchorage.

  • Develop structural and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) models, check modelling assumptions and interpret results under the guidance of an experienced engineer.

  • Support assessments for seismic, extreme weather, blast, fire, impact and other loading conditions, as required by the project.

  • Assist in developing practical strengthening and retrofit designs to address identified structural deficiencies.

  • Support site inspections and seismic walkdowns to gather information and assess existing structures and equipment.

  • Draft technically accurate and timely reports, calculation packages and client correspondence for review by an experienced engineer or engineering manager.

  • Work collaboratively across engineering disciplines, communicate progress and technical issues, and engage with clients as appropriate to your experience.

  • Maintain accurate project records, including progress updates and timesheets, in accordance with company procedures.

What You Will Need:

  • A degree in civil, mechanical or structural engineering, or a related engineering discipline with a strong grounding in structural mechanics.

  • Knowledge of structural behaviour, load paths and the fundamentals of stress, deformation and stability.

  • The ability to identify, analyse and propose solutions to engineering problems.

  • The ability to apply engineering principles to calculations and critically assess modelling assumptions and results.

  • A methodical approach to technical work, with attention to accuracy and clear documentation.

  • Good command of the English language and the ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

  • The ability to work well with others, organise assigned tasks and respond constructively to technical review.

  • An interest in developing knowledge of structural assessment for seismic, extreme weather, blast, fire and accidental loading.

  • The ability to develop a working knowledge of the ABS Health, Safety, Quality and Environmental Management Systems.

  • Legal right to work in the UK.

Experience in structural analysis, design or finite element modelling through academic projects, research, placements or employment would be advantageous. Familiarity with one or more relevant engineering software packages; for example STAAD.Pro, Abaqus, Ansys, LS-DYNA, Mathcad, Tekla Tedds or Hilti PROFIS, is beneficial but not essential.

Reporting Relationships:

  • The incumbent will report to a senior-level engineer or technical manager. This position has no direct reports.
