What is Product Vision?

A product vision is the long-term aspiration that describes the future a product is working toward — the impact it will have on customers and the world. It sits above strategy and roadmap, providing the enduring "why" that gives shorter-term plans meaning and direction.

A compelling vision is ambitious yet credible, customer-centric, and stable over years even as strategies and roadmaps shift beneath it. It serves as a north star for decisions: when priorities conflict, the vision helps teams choose the path that moves toward the desired future.

PMs craft and evangelize the vision to align teams and stakeholders, motivate the people building the product, and maintain coherence across many individual decisions. A vision that's too vague inspires no one; one that's too specific becomes a roadmap and dates quickly.

Examples

  • "A world where anyone can launch a business in a single afternoon."
  • A PM uses the product vision to settle a debate between two competing roadmap directions.
